AMY KUBRICK
HOWE
I am a 19 year old student at Arts University Bournemouth studying Film Production.
I love storytelling with any media but I particularly love film and TV drama. Film makes people feel things - that's always been the thing I've loved most about it: that it can have a really strong emotional connection to people, if you do it right. It's like creating a world, totally immersive, in a different dimension so that people go away and remember the feeling they felt.
I love working hard and rigorously on a project, coming up with a vision and finally having the satisfaction of having created something new.

CREATIVE & DIGITAL MEDIA LEVEL 3 COURSE PROJECTS
These are highlights of my writing, directing and editing work in Year 12 and 13
Jezebel (Drama, 3 mins)
I wrote, directed, shot and edited this psychological thriller about a therapy session with a twist for the Year 12 short film module. I'm quite happy with it, given the tight constraints for time, kit and budget - although it's less visually striking than my original idea. I had a crew of 3, and cast an actor from the college's acting course.
Sony DSLR, Adobe Premiere Pro
I Want To Break Free (Music Video, 1 min 30s)
I directed, shot and edited this shot-for-shot tribute to the classic Queen music video for the Year 13 Music Video module - with a crew of 5 and a cast of 4.
It was a lot of fun to make, and was a great exercise in planning, collaboration on a zero budget, to get performances, lighting and camera just right in a few hours.

Close Now (Visual Montage, 2 mins)
I shot and edited this "Visualiser" test project as part of the Year 13 Music Video module. With a team of 3 , we chose locations in Bristol at night which would visually and atmospherically dramatize the video. Cut to the length of the track, I'm happy with how some of the shots & edits turned out.
Sony DSLR, Adobe Premiere Pro
Young Martyrs (Multi-camera studio, 3 mins) I directed and edited this multi-camera studio shoot, and operated one of the cameras - as a client project for the band Young Martyrs, who were happy with it. Stylistically simple, I learnt multicam directing techniques with Blackmagic cameras and how to edit multicam in Premiere.
Blackmagic Cinema Cameras, Premiere
Bristol Aquarium (Interactive video, 3 mins)
I directed and edited this interactive interview as a commercial client project for the Bristol Aquarium, as part of our Year 12 documentary module.
Framed as an interactive conversation with an expert guide at the Aquarium, I learnt about directing, interviewing and structuring factual content for an audience. The Aquarium were so happy with it that the featured it on their website.
Blackmagic, Stornaway.io Interactive
Groundhog Date (Short Film, 8 mins)
I Edited, Directed, and shot this film at a local brewery (Wiper and True) who kindly agreed to let us film there. We had a day to shoot and it was my first time working with actors which I didn't know which was a great experience.
Sony DSLR, Adobe Premier Pro
BFI Academy 2022-3 - South West
I was selected for the BFI Academy, in which we made a short documentary in 6 weeks.
Further to this, I've also just been selected as one of 66 students for the BFI Film Academy Craft Residential at the NFTS for 2 weeks in April, specialising as an editor.
Bristol Youth (Documentary, 5 mins)
(Rough cut - final version to be released Feb 2023)
I edited and worked as camera assistant on this film. Although I want to be a fiction director because I love leading the process of realising a story and world, working on this short documentary with a team of 8 fellow BFI Academy students gave me the chance to work as camera assistant and editor, and taught me more about the advantages and challenges of collaborating with a team to realise someone's vision within a short timeframe.

My BFI Academy Portfolio (link to BFI site)
As part of the 6 week BFI Academy course, I wrote a production diary reflecting on the making of Bristol Youth. I attended masterclasses and completed written assignments on industry working practices and legislation, working relationships, professional development opportunities, documented my own skills development, and wrote a review of a short film. My reflections on my learning are contained in this portfolio, with course mentors commenting that I completed each section to an excellent standard.
NFTS Film Academy 2023
I was also selected for the NFTS Film Academy. I worked for two weeks with 66 other young filmmakers chosen from accross the UK. We filmed a short film on location with NFTS staff and alumni to guide us through the process. This was an amazing experience and taught me so much about working with a crew and with talks from industry proffessionals and workshops with high end equiptment it was an amazing opportunity to learn and grow as a filmmaker.
A Domestic Guide To Homecooking (Short Film, 5 mins)
This film is a collaborative piece made by me and some of the other selected young filmmakers. I was one of the two editors for this project and as we were working in NFTS editing suites we were taught how to use avid to edit. I found many parts about this 2 week short course very insightfull but also challenging. I was also a script supervisor and had never done script supervision before so it was a learning curve but overall I am happy with what we were able to achieve in only two weeks and with only two days to edit. We were also able to cast professional actors which was great as we were taught how to interact and work with actors on set in a proffesional manor.

Personal Projects
I've made short films with friends and family for years - drama, documentary and music montages
Tiree (Montage, 3 mins)
This is a video I made in April 2022 on Tiree cut in an iMovie on my phone to ‘Where is my Mind’ by The Pixies. The scenery was very striking and I was playing this song on the piano a lot at the time which inspired me to find and shoot the compositions that would work best.
iPhone, iMovie
To Boldly Go (Animation, 3 mins)
I made an animation at Cotham School in Year 8 (2018) for my Silver Arts Award – To Boldly Go – which I wrote, drew, animated and recorded audio for myself using Adobe Sketch and Premiere. It was about a girl who wanted to be an astronaut but was told she couldn’t because she was a girl.
Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe Sketch
Non-video Storytelling Projects
Outside of film and video, I've pursued my interest in storytelling and creativity in other media
Calvin and Sam / Soulmates (Graphic story)
I wrote and illustrated this 2000 word story as part of our graphic design course in Year 12. It's the moving story of two friends, told through their letters to each other.
Blackmagic Cinema Cameras, Premiere
Stains (Audio Comedy Drama, 30 mins)
I wrote, directed, recorded, edited and scored this audio comedy murder mystery for the Podcast module in Year 12. While this isn't a film, it shows my ability to write longer form stories. I learnt about directing a cast of 5 friends from acting class to deliver a fun mystery story.
Adobe Audition, GarageBand
University Projects
Here are some projects I have worked on whilst studying at AUB
Directors Selection Video (5 second video submitted for a uni project)
The prompt for this video was to create a 5 second shot on an iphone without cuts that conveys a story. I found this task challenging but managed to come up with a simple shot that can be interpreted in a few different ways.
Iphone 11, imovie
Directing role for Sheep Head Autumn term Project
For this project I was selected to direct a short 5 min film. Although the story was different to projects I have worked on before I used this opportunity to explore a different perspective of the storyline and overcame challenges with my crew. I had great feedback from my crew after the shoot with people expressing how they liked the enviroment of the set. This highlighted for me how important the role of director is in creating motivation for the team and making sure everyone feels heard and seen. I had one of the biggest crews for this project which was amazing as we all worked very hard to create the best film possible. Although I don't yet have the finished film, I have put some pictures above of me directing and how the set looked on our shoot day.
